What happens during an information session?

We’re so excited that you’re thinking about becoming a foster carer! Although it may take some time, we want to support you as much as we can. Right now, you’ve probably registered your interest and are waiting for the next step. We want to help you know exactly what to expect and how to prepare yourself for the road ahead.

The first step after you've contacted us is to attend an information session. Currently, our foster care information session is available online and is a self-paced, 27-minute video filled with essential information that will help you be the best foster carer you can be.

The video begins with an introduction of You Be You, including who we are, what we do, and who we help. We will then discuss the foster care system, including the difference between foster and kinship care, why children enter care, the financial support offered, and how you as a foster carer can support them.

The session will then cover the basic information on becoming a foster carer, explain how and why children need foster or kinship care, and discuss what social, cultural, and financial support you will have access to. As well as this, you will also be given an idea of what to expect throughout your journey as a foster carer and what responsibilities you must commit to.

What's the next step?

After you’ve learned more about foster care, you will be guided to the next phase of your journey. The next step is all about you! We want to get to know you and make sure that you can provide a child with a secure home environment. This will include home safety and background checks.

When you complete the information session, you'll get to meet some of our friendly team of Foster Care Practitioners. The purpose of our Foster Care Practitioners is to support you as a carer in any way that you need. If you have any questions don't hesitate to get in touch with someone from the team. We're here to help. And remember, attending the information session is crucial to your journey, so make the most of it!
